How Does Fire Affect Your Family Photographs?

You, like most Americans, collect photos of family members. These photos not only help you remember your loved ones but also document your children’s growth. It doesn’t matter if you enjoy scrapbooking or just hanging photos on your walls; your collection is priceless.

You might not realize how common house fires are. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are more structure fires yearly in the United States. Of these fires are almost 26% related to family homes. House fires and photos don’t mix.

Your family photos are most at risk from flames. In just seconds, flames can consume any photo. Digital photos can also be destroyed by flames if they are stored digitally. It is therefore advisable that you upload your photos to an external server.

Unfortunately, the fire doesn’t have to touch your photos to burn them. Excessive heat from house fires can be very destructive. Heat-related damage can range from minor discoloration to total destruction.

Another threat to family photos is smoke. Smoke is released into the atmosphere when a fire burns. Even photos taken in relatively unaffected areas of your house may show smoke damage. Although a professional restoration company may be able to improve the look of these photos, some may not last forever.
